Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Play-Off Climax
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better person. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, coming up a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
