Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.
He commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, excited about the promise of the organization, and eagerly await following their development".
The prominent academic, who previously led Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the AI firm said it respected his decision to resign.
"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This development comes after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on recently to approve a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will subsequently head to the administration of the White House for approval. Trump has indicated he expects to endorse the legislation, after changing his stance on the issue following pushback from his base.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the Congressional committee last week referenced multiple well-known personalities in the financier's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.
The communications showed that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with he often trying to link the academic to influential global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were shared with the general audience, he expressed he took "total ownership for my poor choice to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish confidence and fix relationships with the people nearest to me".
Professional History
The professor served in high-level positions under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be associated with the group.
Summers entered the leadership of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
